The words Extra Special cut through a small rectangular gold-tone plaque in open block lettering — the kind of direct, self-assured sentiment that mid-century and early post-war novelty jewelry wore without irony. Stick pins of this type were pinned to lapels, hat bands, and scarves, a small declaration worn close to the body. Unsigned, as the vast majority of novelty stick pins were. A tiny, confident object with a lot of personality for its size.

The front face presents a dark grey resin cameo — a crowned classical figure — set within a seed pearl halo and an ornate gold-tone filigree frame with applied leaf details; flip it over and a full clock face appears, signed "American Time," with black Roman numeral cartouches on a gilt sunburst dial. The gold-tone chain tassel below anchors the composition and adds movement. A piece that commits fully to the Victorian revival sensibility of the 1970s, functioning as both jewelry and timepiece. Cast in the shape of a small leather-bound book, this locket opens on a tiny hinge to reveal celluloid photo sleeves inside, meant to hold a keepsake portrait close. The spine and cover carry etched detail true to the binding it imitates, scrollwork corners and all. The reverse is engraved "To Charmion from Walt," a sweetheart gift with its own small story intact. A rare survivor with both craftsmanship and history behind it.

The geometry is precise and deliberate — a black enamel diamond lozenge at center, set with a small floral marcasite cluster, flanked by symmetrical openwork filigree wings dense with pave-set steel-grey stones. The combination of jet-black enamel and gunmetal sparkle is a direct echo of the 1920s German marcasite and onyx tradition, here translated into a silver-tone reproduction piece with the same graphic authority. Wears beautifully on a black dress collar, a blazer lapel, or a hat brim.
