A deep burgundy enamel apple, three-dimensional and fully in the round, opens to reveal a pavé interior of bright white rhinestones — as if the fruit has been split to show something worth finding inside. The green enamel leaf and gold-tone stem are cleanly rendered, and the contrast between the lacquered exterior and the glittering cross-section gives this piece more wit than the typical novelty pin. A product of the 1980s figural brooch revival, when costume jewelry leaned fully into the pleasure of the unexpected.
